The History of BWKS

Wado-ryu Karate, meaning "Way of Harmony," was founded by Hironori Ohtsuka (1892-1982), blending traditional Okinawan Karate with Japanese Jujutsu, particularly Shindo Yoshin Ryu, to create a unique, fluid style emphasizing evasion, body shifting, and natural movement over brute force. Ohtsuka, already a Jujutsu master, studied under Gichin Funakoshi, then developed his own system, officially registering Wado-ryu (Way of Peace / Harmony) in 1934, making it distinct for its grace, throws, and locks alongside strikes

The first clubs of our Association (British Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Shikukai) were founded by the late Yoshi Shinohara in 1975.  These were based in East London and Essex where he taught and promoted Wado-Ryu to the highest standards.

Today we are a slimmed down organisation but still predominantly based in East London and Essex. We endeavour to uphold the values, standards and highest traditions of Master Shinohara whilst always seeking to continually improve our knowledge and understanding of the art.
